Holidays to Samos Town give you ouzo bars, local cuisine and a neat little beach – plus a journey into Ancient Greece nearby.
Samos Town sits on the northeast corner of the Aegean island of Samos. Chic boutiques, a bustling market and friendly bars and tavernas lie along its narrow, colourful streets. It comes fused to the capital, Vathy, making it a rather lively place. Samos Town itself has more of a traditional village feel, though – many of the locals still make their living from the olive groves in the surrounding mountains. As for a beach, there’s a great little one set in a bay.
Samos Town has its very own little beach about 5 minutes’ walk east of the harbour. Gagou Beach is a 200-metre-long curve of shingle that gently slopes into the still and almost impossibly clear waters. It’s tucked into a bay so it’s nice and sheltered, and comes with a Blue Flag award. When you want sand between your toes, there are lots of stretches around the island – one of the best is Psili Ammos, about 25 minutes’ away.
Samos Town is a great base for exploring the rest of the island, and one of the main highlights is the ancient Sanctuary of Heraion, half-an-hour’s drive away. The largest temple in Ancient Greece once stood here – it was dedicated to the goddess Hera, who was thought to have been born on Samos. Today, the ruins are up for show – the one, solitary pillar rising 10 metres high gives you a great perspective on the scale of the place.
