There’s certainly no shortage of pools at the beachside Hotel Atlantica Portobello Royal – it’s got 14 of them.
From the outside, this hotel feels like a Mediterranean village, all low-rise, terracotta buildings. Bedrooms are getting a makeover for summer 2016, when we’ll also be unveiling luxurious new rooms with private pools.
You’re a stone’s throw from the sandy beach, which has views to neighbouring Nissyros. And it’s a five-minute drive to Kardamena’s restaurants and shops.

Return visit just as good as the first with a lot of choice for vegans
We travelled as a couple towards the end of September and had a lovely break. The hotel grounds are very well maintained and the staff friendly (especially the ladies in the shop which is reasonably priced by the way). The place was still busy but no problem getting sunbed near a pool (there are a lot of pools) or on the beach at around 10.30 am each day after breakfast. We stayed in one of the new private pool rooms that face the ocean. Having my first morning coffee on the terrace outside the room looking out towards the sea was perfect. The room was a decent size and the bed very comfortable. Our private pool was very cold but ok once you got over the initial shock. I am 5"4" and was just able to stand up in it - it is the same depth throughout. There are lot of shared pools throughout the complex, some busier than others. We found the pools towards the front of the hotel to be less busy. The beach is not great but ok. Lots of sunbeds but they were spaced close together. I will say the parasols on the beach were made of a thin material that did not provide complete shade so take care. I enjoyed the buffet food at the hotel. There were plenty of clearly marked vegan and vegetarian options which was fantastic. Food labels here were the best I have seen with allergies clearly indicated. The only thing missing for me was a dairy free milk alternative. I did ask one of the staff who went to go and check but never came back. Thankfully, I had brought my own just in case. I would however recommend making the hotel aware if you are vegan before arriving as this may well affect what is on offer. We were only here for a few days so did not really pay attention to what was on for entertainment but it looked very low key. Just so that you are aware, there were a number of cats on the property, they looked taken care of but I would have preferred to not have seen any strays at all, especially seeing as one had kittens. I worry what happens to them out of season. I can highly recommend this hotel if you are after quiet holiday with your partner or young family. Not sure it would be a place suited for families with teenagers.More
FANTASTIC FAMILY HOLIDAY
We stayed at this hotel for one week from the 20th of September,my husband and myself ,my son and partner and a 10 month old baby and had a brilliant holiday We had a lovely room with a sea view,i was a bit disappointed at first as I wanted one next to a pool like a lot of them are but it was actually perfect for us and we preferred it as it was quieter The hotel is stunning and rooms were immaculate, the cleaners came twice a day and the fridge stocked with water every day soft drinks and also tea and coffee We used the beach and pools every day and never struggled to find a sunbed, this is the first hotel we have been to where you didn't have to get up early to get a bed which was great The beach bar was great brilliant staff and lovely toasted sandwiches Food was lovely and the staff in the main restaurant were great with my granddaughter they made a fuss of her even if she did make a bit of a mess with her food Fay and Costas I think their names were The only problem we had was in the Asian restaurant,we went twice and booked for four adults and one baby, when we got there there was a high chair ready for her but strangely she didn't get a meal so she had to share our meals which wasn't ideal but we managed so please be aware of this,if taking a baby There was a lovely waitress who gave us extra prawn crackers for her and gave us our meals first as she was hungry We decided to book again for the last night but it was a different experience from the first, there was different waitress and we were made to feel we shouldn't have been there with a baby,we were there first at 7pm and shown to the table we gave our granddaughter some crackers to keep her quiet as she was hungry we asked for some more crackers as the meal took ages to come,we asked three times and got none they served everyone in the restaurant then before us even though they could see we were trying to keep her quiet/entertained but she was hungry and when we finished and got up to leave no one acknowledged us leaving, I think if it was supposed to be child free restaurant we should have been told and also told she wouldn't be getting a meal This was the only bit of the holiday that we had a problem with but It didn't spoil anything for us as the rest of the week had been amazing and we would definatley return Also must mention the car hire guy who sits outside the restaurant,we decided to hire a car one morning and he had it all sorted within half an hour for us at really good ratesMore
Myself and my family stayed at the hotel from 3rd October for one week. I think this hotel is one of the best 5 star resorts that we have stayed in. We stayed in room 152, it was perfect as it was close to the amenities and was always spotlessly clean. Every member of staff in this hotel is extremely friendly, I would like to highlight that the gentleman serving drinks in the lobby bar in the evening was always smiling, and the two ladies working in the pool bar were so friendly and accommodating. The food in the restaurant is wonderful, there is always so much choice and the restaurant manager and whole team were always very helpful. The salt water swimming pools were a really nice change to chlorine pools. I can’t speak for the evening entertainment as we never went however the singer in the lobby bar in the evenings was very good. I will recommend this hotel to all my friends and will definitely be back in the future. More
What you see in the photographs is what you get,, amazing place.Staff great from arrival to leaving, they are there to help with anything and are all a credit to this hotel. With 14 pools you aren't crowded and always have plenty sunbeds to chose from, space is amazing here and it gives the feeling of privacy all around. A walk to the beach is a couple of minutes and views are stunning. The food is of every variety for breakfast lunch and dinner, and you are spoilt for choice . Katerina the restaurant manager was always on hand to make sure everything was good and was a lovely lady . Demitria ( pool bar and upstairs bar) Armen (upstairs bar) Sophia (upstairs bar and dinning room) to name just a few are a credit to this hotel ...they remember your order daily and give a lovely service with a smile . A trip into Kardamena town is worth doin 1.80 euro on the bus which picks u up at front of hotel, about 15 mins journey , we walked back which took about 40 mins ( but checked out other hotels along the way ) Jam bar is lovely and friendly in the town square and u can sit outside and watch the world go by, beautiful restaurants and bars along the front looking out to sea. Booking trips is much cheaper in town than through tour operator ... Kos town by bus about 40 mins and lovely to see. The entertainment on an evening was same every night .i understand this isn't a loud hotel and is very peaceful and classy but varying this would be a great pull I think . I requested a seaview on booking and got just that , beautiful panoramic views every morning. Little touches like bottled water in the fridge every day , toiletries replaced when we ran out , cans of pop and lots of towels always . Pool towels worth hiring as u can change 3 times a week at the spa. 4 restaurants on site which u can book previous day and use as many times as u like, also a beautiful gelataria with milkshakes aswell . This hotel is beautiful with great staff and I wouldn't hesitate in re booking. Thanks Porto bello for an amazing holiday which possibly is one of the best ever. More

Cannot complain about this hotel at all. The rooms were lovely, the staff lovely, the pools lovely, the food lovely! Hotel is right on the beach with plenty of sun loungers around the pools (all 14) and the beach. Hotel was full whilst we visited but still could get a space without getting up at the crack of dawn. The Greek restaurant is well worth visiting and it’s only a short journey into kardemena town (I’d advise a taxi) if you need to get away. There’s a few things that for me, would make this hotel 5*... these would be: a few extra bars around the pool areas and/or waiter service and a more varied choice of evening entertainment (the same singer was on every night). However this remains an exceptionally good hotel. More
