Holidays to Kassandra are set in Halkidiki, where tavernas are on hand for food and powdery beaches are a flip-flop away.
Halkidiki is a trident-shaped peninsula that juts out into the sea in the north-east region of Greece. On the westernmost prong of the trident sits Kassandra, a picturesque resort famous for its fusion of upbeat nightlife and postcard-perfect beaches you could laze on for hours. Possidi Beach is one of the most Insta-worthy swathes in the area. In fact, you’d be forgiven for mistaking this shifting sand bar for a beach in a far-flung destination like the Maldives. Powdery sands and peacock-blue waters make a winning combo.
If you want to get a taste for local life, make a beeline for Afitos. This clifftop village is filled with traditional Greek architecture – the streets are paved with cobblestones and 19th-century houses give an old-worldly feel to the place. There’s a central plaza where you’ll find a scattering of bars and restaurants serving local faves like souvlaki and ouzo, and the Church of St Demetreus is worth a visit, too. It features dramatic domes and hand-painted murals. You’ll also have a few trinket shops to dip in and out of if you’re after some souvenirs. And to top it all off, the village’s hilltop spot gives you top-notch views over the Toroneos Gulf, the Sithonia peninsula and the Aegean Sea.
Fancy yourself a bit of a history whizz? You won’t want to miss out on a visit to the Temple of Ammon Zeus. It’s a fairly small site, but even so, it’s considered one of Halkidiki’s most important ancient temples. You'll be able to tick off the Cave of Dionysus and a Roman bathhouse as well as the main temple, and once you’re finished exploring, you can wander over to Kallithea's liveliest stretch of sand – it's just a few steps away. This seaside spot is backed by olive-green pine trees and it’s close to a strip of buzzy bars and eateries.
