Fourka holidays

Fourka, Halkidiki

Holidays to Fourka show you Halkidiki’s more rustic side – expect stone houses, pine-backed beaches and historic chapels.

Tavernas, temples and hiking trails

The phrase ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’ rings true for Fourka. It’s a traditional village on the Greek mainland, which might not sound like the place for a fly-and-flop break. But there’s lots for holiday-goers to love here, from the rustic town centre, which is hugged by Mediterranean greenery, to the historic churches scattered along the cobbled streets. St. Ioannis Temple goes back to the Byzantine era, and there’s a chapel with time-worn murals painted in the 16th century. The beach is closer than you think, too…

Right by a Blue Flag beach

If you’ve been to Greece before, you might know that they often plonk the word ‘skala’ (which means steps or ladder) in front of a place to name its coastal neighbour. That’s exactly what they’ve done with Skala Fourka, a teeny seafront town that covers all your beachy needs. It’s less than a 10-minute taxi ride away, and comes with the Blue Flag seal of approval. Possidi Beach is close by, too. It’s perched on the foot of the Halkidki peninsula, and pokes out into the Aegean Sea like a beige banana.

Daytrip central

Cast a wider net, and you can seriously level up your holiday itinerary. Kallithea, the region’s biggest party place, is just a 15-minute taxi ride away, and offers all-day seshes and late-night clubs. Petralona Cave near Nea Moudina is another popular daytrip – it’s one of the most impressive in Europe, thanks to its stalactites, stalagmites and fossils, and is half-way to Thessaloniki. Head there to see what’s going on in Greece’s second-largest city– the 15th-century White Tower has a six-floor museum, which offers panoramic views over the Thermaic Golf from the top. Plus, swap car rides for boat trips, and you can visit Kelifos Island. It’s shaped like a turtle, and is inhabited only by wild goats.
