A quiet gem

Ermones whisks you away from the bustle of Corfu’s busier places to a pretty little cove on the island’s west coast. The main attraction here is the sand-and-shingle beach, which nestles at the foot of cypress-clad green hills. And just a few feet from the sands you’ll find homey Greek tavernas, along with holiday essentials like motorbike and watersports rental shops.

Blue Flag winner

The beach is 300 metres long, but what it lacks in size it certainly makes up for in beauty. Fruit and olive trees surround the bay, while rocks and shingle make for a dramatic landscape – though you might want to bring your Flip-flops. Meanwhile, if sand’s non-negotiable, try Glyfada, 3 kilometres down the road. This long, sandy stretch is one of the best beaches on the island.

Near Corfu Town

You’re a 20-minute drive from Corfu Town, the island capital. Here you can get lost in the maze of winding, cobbled streets of the old town, known as Campiello. There are lots of museums and churches – including the red-domed St Spiridon, where the island’s patron saint is buried – plus a 16th-century fortress. And the Liston, in the Esplanade area, is the place to go for people-watching over a coffee at one of the elegant cafés.
