Holidays to Donji Seget put you in a quaint fishing village just a 30-minute stroll from UNESCO-listed Trogir.
Search for this place on the map, and you’ll see a big beige patch on Croatia’s southern coast. Its name translates to ‘Lower Seget’ (to distinguish it from its inland neighbour, Gornji Seget) and its petite village packs in narrow streets, quaint cafés and pre-Romanesque buildings like the Church of St. Danijela. But that’s not what it’s known for – Donji Seget is just a 30-minute stroll from the Historic City of Trogir, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with so much Medieval architecture that it’s nicknamed ‘mini Dubrovnik’. Make it your base, and you can spend your days snapping panoramic pics from the top of the Cathedral of St. Lawrence bell tower and walking the defensive walls around Kamerlango Fortress, before grabbing fresh bread and cheese at the weekly market. Beach picnic, anyone?
Croatia’s beaches are known for their eggshell-coloured pebbles and see-the-bottom waters, and Donji Seget’s sunbathing spots are no exception. The main one – Seget Beach – promises a powdery mix of sand and shingle, which looks like something you’d sprinkle on top of an apple crumble. There are concrete sections where you can lay out your towel and recreate pics from your Euro summer Pinterest board, too. Fancy stretching your legs between swims? A waterfront promenade lines up sea-view strolls to places like Medena Beach, and you’ve got lots of hiking routes in the local area if you’ve popped a pair of trainers in your beach bag.
Hiking routes wind from Donji Seget to nearby towns and viewpoints, so you can pack your trekking poles if you’re an avid walker. The Trail of Health is a popular one – it takes you through olive groves and vineyards en route to a hilltop church, which overlooks Seget Bay. Krka National Park’s on the cards, too. This 10,000-hectare site is a bit too far away to walk to, but you can drive there in 45 minutes, and then go chasing waterfalls on foot. Alternatively, put Split in your sat-nav and climb to the top of Diocletian’s Palace. This Game of Thrones filming location is about the same distance away, and you can climb to the top for birds-eye views of the biggest city on the Croatian coast. And if island-hopping’s your thing, the Blue Lagoon’s only a boat trip away. Diving and snorkelling are top things to do here, thanks to water, which is Caribbean-level clear.
