The weather in Austria varies across the country – it’s split across three quite different climate zones. In the east, cities like Vienna enjoy minimal rainfall and warm summers. But if you’re heading to the mountainous region, you can expect cooler temperatures – though of course there's still plenty of sunshine in summer. The rest of the country is continental in climate, so the seasons run by the book. The spring and autumn months are good times to visit, as the weather’s mainly dry and mild.

Health & Safety

You should take out comprehensive travel and medical insurance to cover you while you’re away. Also, if you’re travelling to the EU and you apply for a card now, you'll get a new UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) instead of an EHIC. This entitles you to emergency medical treatment on the same terms as Austrian nationals. It won’t, however, cover you for medical repatriation, ongoing medical treatment or non-urgent treatment.
