Shopping

Bargain buys

If you don’t mind a bit of an out-of-town trek, drop by the regional farmers' market on the first Saturday of every month. It’s held from early May through to early October at Naturpark Sölktäler. Browse products like smoked meats, sausages, breads and honey.

Mid-range buys

Schladming has a casual clothing and activewear brand, Blue Tomato, and a few specialist sports retailers to choose from. Klieber Josef is great for shoes and handbags, if you’re looking for something non-sporty in town.

Eating out

With all the walking you’ll be doing, you’ll need some hearty meals to keep your energy up. Schladming has around 40 restaurants – an excellent number for a pretty small town. There are plenty of traditional places where you can sample the local specialities, but you can also find high-end eateries for a more sophisticated experience.

History and romance at Talbachschenke

For 400 years, the Talbachschenke restaurant has been feeding visitors from all walks of life. The rustic interior makes it the perfect choice for a romantic meal. Cosy up as you cook your own meat on a hot stone, accompanied by homemade sauces, baked potatoes and fresh bread.

Modern art at Die Tischlerei

If you’d like a more modern meal, visit Die Tischlerei. Stylish surroundings compliment the menu, which takes simple produce and turns it into a culinary work of art.

Something different at Stadthotel Brunner

Right in the centre of town, the Stadthotel Brunner houses a popular restaurant. The contemporary décor matches the interesting menu, which combines hearty traditional fare with international favourites and even unique Ayurvedic dishes.

Getting about

Buses

There are three main bus stations around town, so you won’t have to go far. Local hiking buses are free with a Schladming Summer Card, and are excellent for reaching the many summer lifts in the area.

Summer lifts

The summer guest card from your hotel gets you access to 5 gondolas for free, and most of them are open daily from late May to October. Try the Planai gondola, Hochwurzen gondola, Preunegg Jet, Schladminger Tauern cable car, Dachstein Glacier lift and Rittisberg chairlift.

Trains

The train station is around a 10-minute walk outside of town. From there, you can catch direct trains to Werfen (50 minutes) to visit the castle overlooking the town, or Salzburg (1 hour 35 minutes), to immerse yourself in history and culture.

On foot

Schladming is a small place, so nothing in town is too far to walk to. It’s mostly flat and the centre is pedestrianised, so it’s very easy to get around on foot. Only getting to the Hotel Ferienalm requires a slight uphill walk, as it’s elevated above the town.

Walking

Walking

Schladming is a great area for a walking holiday. Enjoy fabulous views as you ascend the Hochwurzen gondola to the start of numerous trails through the hills. Discover beautiful alpine meadows, thick forests and impressive rock falls. A must-do is the leisurely walk along the Talbach gorge to the Untertal Valley. The Schladming tourist office has a variety of guided walks for all abilities and all members of the family.

Hochstein Summit

Up for a full-day hike? Catch the bus to the village of Haus im Ennstal and then take the cable car up to the top. Route 44 leads up to the summit, and you can take your time to enjoy the views. Stop for a break at the Hauser Kaibling hut and then decide whether you want to follow route 780 back the way you came, or take route 41 towards Gföllalm and back to Schladming through the forest.

Krahbergzinken into Untertal

This hike takes about 4 hours, but it’s mostly downhill and the views are spectacular. Start by taking the Planai gondola to the top and then follow the panoramic path around the summit to Krahbergsattel. This is a great spot for a picnic before you begin your descent. Then follow the steep route 54 down to Untertal – walking poles are recommended. Catch the bus back to Schladming from the Gasthof Tetter, or walk along route 773 through the Talbach Gorge.
