Hinterglemm holidays

© Saalbach Hinterglemm

With heaps of mountain trails and cycle routes, holidays to Hinterglemm are a little slice of paradise for walkers and nature lovers.

Chocolate-box charm

Hinterglemm is about as authentically Austrian as it gets. Wood and stone mountain huts are peppered through this sunny valley village, and there’s a babbling brook winding through the middle. There’s lots going on here in the summer, from traditional festivals to vintage car shows – for a real feel of the local culture, catch the weekly evening market and listen to the live bands as you peruse the stalls in the pedestrianised centre. And with free public transport to neighbouring Saalbach, you’ve got the whole area at your feet.

A hiker's haven

With over 400km of walking trails and cycle routes, nature-lovers have hit the jackpot in Hinterglemm. Wander through alpine fields filled with wildflowers, venture deeper into shady woodland, or lace up your walking boots and set off on a mountain hike. A must-do is the Baumzipfelweg, Europe’s highest treetop trail – follow the bridges between the trunks, snap some pics of the valley views on the way, and at the end you’ll see the ‘Golden Gate Bridge’ of the Alps.

Family fun

There are heaps of things to do with the little ones too. Head down the road to Saalbach’s Käpt’n Hook adventure pool and kids will have a blast with the pirate ship swimming pool, climbing nets and slides. There’s also a playground at the top of the Schattberg X-press gondola, or follow the Wildlife trail and see if you can spot any foxes, golden eagles or deer. And for a fantasy feel, take a trip to the Devil’s Water nature park where you can find a fairy and gnome world, magical cave walks and ponds you can paddle in to cool off.

Top things to see and do in Hinterglemm

Beaches

Places for a dip

On a sunny day, there's nothing more refreshing than a cold plunge. You can stop off for a splash at Lake Hochtor or Hackelberger on a mountain walk, or if you want to make a day of it, take the 680 bus to Zell am See. You'll find sandy beaches to lay back on, plus the water down here will be a bit warmer than up in the peaks.

Shopping

Bargain buys

Hinterglemm's got a summer market one evening a week, so make your way to the village centre to see what's going on. You'll find stalls selling traditional handicrafts and local specialities, so it's a great opportunity to grab a mountain memento to take home with you.

Mid-range buys

There are a few sports shops in the village centre where you can browse the latest gear and equipment, or buy a new pair of socks for a hike.

Nightlife

Laid-back evenings

After a meal, mosey into the village centre. Make sure to catch the weekly evening market to listen to live bands, shop at some speciality stalls and check out the local artists. Plus there are lots of events on here throughout the summer, like torchlit walks and the annual farmers' festival.

Lively evenings

A handful of bars stay open in the summer, and most of them are in hotels. For colourful cocktails and a big gin menu, pop in The View Bar in Hinterglemm's centre. And if you fancy a boogie, the London Pub is a great spot for some casual drinks and cheesy pop songs.

Food & drink

Eating out

Between Hinterglemm and Saalbach, you'll have plenty of options for tasting some traditional alpine fare. There are around 40 mountain huts that stay open in the summer that are popular with hungry hikers, serving classic Austrian cooking like homemade soup and dumplings. And for a bit more variety, most hotels have à la carte restaurants, so pop in for dishes from far and wide.

Sausages and schnitzel at Xandl Stadl

On the outskirts of Hinterglemm, this charming hut offers Austrian comfort food with a refined feel. Tuck into venison sausages and schnitzel, or push the boat out with truffle oil carpaccio made from local beef.

East meets west at Café Oriental

In the village centre, Hotel Alpen-Karawanserai's Café Oriental does things a bit differently. Inspired by flavours from Asia and the Middle East, you can get things like koftas, hummus and falafel here. Make sure to try one of their refreshing homemade lemonades, made with flowers and herbs from the alpine meadows in Hinterglemm.

Authentic Austrian at Fuhrmannstube

For a laidback bite to eat, this traditional spot in Hotel Glücksschmiede is just the ticket. It's all low wooden beams, lanterns and copper pots hanging on the walls, so take it all in over a juicy burger or big bowl of stew.
