Holidays to Bad Ischl blend culture, wellness and timeless beauty of the Alps in one.

A little town with a big story

This charming little town in the Austrian lake district has a story as rich as its salt. It all began in 1563, when salt mining put the town on the map and earned it the nickname “salt town.” By 1823, people had discovered that the local brine wasn’t just valuable for trade – it was great for your health too. The spa scene quickly took off, and the town even earned its name – ‘Bad’ which means ‘bath’ in German. Before long, it became a favourite summer escape for Emperor Franz Joseph I and Empress Sissi, and their royal touch still lingers today in the elegant villas, leafy parks and grand spa buildings.

Step into imperial style

As you wander through Bad Ischl, you can’t help but slow down and soak in its charm. Picture pastel-coloured buildings, cafés spilling with tempting cakes and the soft notes of live music floating through the air. Stop by the Kaiservilla, the emperor’s former summer palace, and lose yourself in its landscape gardens with manicured lawns, rose beds and grand fountains. Afternoons are made for sweet treats at Café Zauner, a local favourite since imperial times. And for a touch of musical heritage, stop by the Lehar Vill for an outdoor concert.

Mountains, lakes and market days

There are heaps to soak up and explore in the surrounding area. Hop on the Katrin gondola up to 1,400m for knock-out valley views, or follow gentle trails and café-hop along the Traun River. Fancy a day trip? Jump on a bus or train to Salzburg and channel your inner Sound of Music. Or spend the day in the storybook village of Hallstatt, complete with a boat trip on Wolfgangsee. Back in Bad Ischl, Fridays are for the lively market, where flowers, fresh produce and golden honey fill the stalls – a real taste of local life.
