Bad Gastein holidays

Natural beauty and spa time meet during holidays to Bad Gastein – one of Austria’s most unique alpine towns.

A setting worth shouting about

Bad Gastein makes a statement from the moment you arrive. It’s built on the sides of a steep gorge, with mountain peaks all around. Grand hotels, decked with ornate balconies, add to the camera appeal – but it’s the Bad Gastein waterfall that’s the star of every shot. Running right through the centre of town, the cascade is photo ready from every angle, casting a haze of mist into the air as it tumbles from rock to rock. Follow sloping stairways and cross arched bridges as you search for the next panoramic viewpoint – or simply sit back in a café for a spot of waterfall watching, drink in hand.

Spa days, the Alpine way

Bad Gastein has been perfecting the art of switching off for centuries – since Roman times in fact. Fast forward to now and that spa heritage is still going strong. At the Felsentherme spa, you can drift between steaming outdoor pools with mountain views, stretch out in panoramic relaxation rooms and unwind in saunas carved straight into the rock. Then there’s the valley’s unique wellness speciality: radon therapy. Take a trip into tunnels cut deep inside the mountain, where the gentle heat and natural doses of radon have been proven to ease all kinds of aches and pains.

High-altitude highlights

When it comes to mountain scenery, Bad Gastein delivers the goods. Hop aboard the Stubnerkogelbahn and glide up to big-sky views in minutes. At the top, the cliff walkway and suspension bridge add an up-in-the-air feel to the panorama – step out and soak up the sweeping alpine backdrop. Prefer to take in the scenery from firmer ground? There’s a whole network of hiking trails to explore, from easy scenic strolls to more leg-testing routes. Even better, many lifts and local activities are included with the Gastein Card, making it easier (and better value) to get out and explore more of those high-altitude highlights.
