Holidays to Vieux Fort take you to a chilled-out patch of southern St Lucia, where you'll find a peaceful beach, friendly locals and a bay made famous centuries ago by pirates.
As St Lucia’s third-biggest town, Vieux Fort doesn’t hold back when it comes to its waterfront. The big name here’s Anse des Sables Beach, the area’s longest sweep of sand. This palm-backed swathe stretches out for over one-and-a-half kilometres, and is home to a few of the town’s sea-view restaurants. Elsewhere, Vieux Fort Bay’s a popular stomping ground for windsurfers and kitesurfers.
A holiday to Vieux Fort puts you under an hour's drive from St Lucia’s most-famous natural landmarks, the Piton Mountains. These two UNESCO-protected peaks stand at over 2,000 feet tall, and are covered from head to toe in Tarzan-style jungle. Zip-lining, hiking and 4x4 safaris are just some of the activities that make this place a must-visit.
Vieux Fort has its fair share of historical sights, too. At Black Bay, you can learn about St Lucia’s link to the legendary pirate, Blackbeard – he used to stash his stolen goods in this part of the island in the 1700s. The Moule a Chique viewpoint, meanwhile, is home to a 100-year-old, hilltop lighthouse. From here, you can see the neighbouring island of St Vincent off in the distance.
