Lovely holiday but hopefully some helpful feedback
A real mixed bag to report here. Firstly we had a lovely holiday and the service was always very nice and professional. The resort staff could not do enough for you and were always pleasant and polite. On arrival, our first impressions were that the resort did not look like a 5* and over time that proved to be the case. The main reception is large and leads to the main bar arena. The problem for this area is that it lacked soul - it was a bit like a cave where all noise became an echo and any kind of entertainment became added noise (echo) rather than something enjoyable to listen to. The PA system was inaudible so that was more noise. We were taken by some lovely staff to our room which again was large but with too little by way of essential expectations. Rooms looked tired...we learned later that the resort are already underway with refurbishing the whole complex a block at a time. Storage facilities for clothes and holiday luggage was sparse and bathroom facilities were definitely nowhere close to 5*. During the 2 weeks stay, we had some really heavy rain which at one point was dripping through the ceiling which only created a small puddle. We brought this to the attention of the concierge who was quick to have someone make repairs to the ceiling. Despite all this, the room staff always did a lovely clean job and sometimes even left the token towel features on the bed to greet us. The resort itself is a really nice size if you want to move around. It is large enough to get in some 30-40 min walks with a variety of trails by the sea, through jungle paths and generally throughout the resort facilities. Bars, restaurants and toilet facilities are mostly very close to all points in the main resort. Sea front provided a nice mix with sandy beaches and some rocky areas to walk through which which were very pleasant. Even had the opportunity to open up some coconuts which was sublime. Free snorkelling was available for resort residents. All the other beach activities like Seadoos, Parasailing, Scuba diving, etc were available. Food was really good with lots of variety on offer at every sitting. Themes were used on most evenings and they always put on a nice display. Breakfast was available in a number of different restaurants for convenience of where your room was located. A La Carte restaurants choices were great with Brazilian, Steak, Mediterranean, Italian, Japanese and Thai on offer through bookings (as part of all incl) as well as an all day coffee shop, beach grill/bar and healthy smoothie bar. Bars throughout the resort were well staffed and always had waitresses walking the grounds including the beaches to serve drinks. Whilst not obligatory, we found it common to offer tips in the region of $1. Within the facility is a brand new Dolphin centre. Being a bit apprehensive about the ethics of having these animals in captivity, we decided to have a look. We were really impressed with the care they got and the rotation program they have with sister facilities. There was little doubt that these intelligent animals were having a nice time. We actually took the opportunity to get up close and swim with them which was a very special experience. They are smart beyond belief. Entertainment at the resort was pretty poor but I think that was more to do with the acoustics in the facility - it was clear that the audio sync was not coming from the performers on the stage. The performers themselves were pretty good. What we found was the fact that we saw better acts on the street in Playa del Carmen - the resort could improve by bringing some of those acts out to perform on stage . Watch out for time share selling. Fine if it is what you want to invest in but beware of getting pulled into something that you may regret later...these people are highly trained at getting folks to part with their hard earned cash without necessarily having a full appreciation of what they have just bought! Overall, as I started, we really enjoyed ourselves. The facility however needs to fully refurb and do something about the main reception building and theatre entertainment if it wants to be a 5*. If you are booking your holiday with TUI, it’s worth contacting an agent to check that you can get a refurb room where you also get a free safety deposit box - that is quite a saving at about £50. In summary, I am only scoring the facility at 3* in order to get folks to read this. The staff for uMore
Destination Wedding Nov 2017- Full Review
My now husband and I, along with 22 of our closest friends and family recently stayed and were married at the Grand Sirenis (GS). My husband and his family are from Mexico and therefore fluent in Spanish, my family and friends are all from Canada and only speak English and some French. I have worked in the hospitality industry around the GTA for 10+ years and I can honestly say that this resort met and often exceeded our expectations. We visited the resort between November 6-13th 2017. I will try to touch on all inquires you fellow travellers may have. Below is an more detailed review but here is a quick coles notes version. -resort is HUGE. If you are capable of walking this is no trouble. It takes an average of 15 minutes walking at a decent pace from one end to the other. There is gold cart service in front of your concierge and at the main lobby every 15 minutes -three pools, two with entertainment which was great and one for relaxing. I never made it to the lazy river but my friends said it was good -Lots of food options, good authentic Mexican cuisine as well as other choices for those less adventurous. Breakfast always had everything you could ask for. Themed buffet nights were great as well as regular evenings. -BOOK A LA CARTS WHEN YOU ARRIVE they are not all open 7 days/week (of course, there are SO many) so ask for reviews and go to your favourites. We did the french (very good, 4 courses *usually an additional cost but was included for the two of us with the wedding package) and the brazilian was great too! Good reviews from our guests for the Japanese (good show and sushi) as well as the Italian. Steak house was reviewed as mediocre -lots to do! for FREE. Dolphin show, pool entertainment (games, aquafit etc), spanish lessons, snorkeling and other water sports, bikes, sports bar -bring more small bills for tipping, the staff is always at your service and make sure they are taken care of too. They do a great job and deserve it. Drivers, waitstaff, bartenders, housekeepers etc... OK more detailed intinerary below.. (including wedding) Check in- We were greeted with a welcome cocktail (fairly standard) and all of our luggage was safely unloaded and brought to our room. It did take a little time to check all 24 of us in but that is to be expected. Naturally it was quicker with fewer questions. We were driven in golf carts to our buildings. We stayed in the Kukuklan and our guests the two buildings on either side. The staff were very accommodating in keeping us together. ROOMS- all rooms were very clean, not a spot to be seen. Housekeeping staff very friendly, fast and accommodating. New towel art everyday, bar restocked without question, large 3 liter of water, towels and sheets refreshed daily. Rubi took care of us and always made everything perfect. Ordered room service one day it was raining and it was fairly quick and FREE! ***some items are free (pizza, salads, sandwich) and others have a charge that will be placed on your invoice. Yes there is a divider in the bathroom, don't worry. FOOD- again, lots of options always. No one in our entire group had a meal they did not enjoy. DRINKS- lots of cocktail options! ask bartenders for their signature cocktail to mix it up. Shoutout to the bartenders at Pool 1 bar for keeping our group well... errr.. hydrated ;) ENTERTAINMENT- Daily at pool was great. Evening singers (solo and live bands) at the Skybar were awesome! Definitely make your way up to the skybar, so much fun for couples and groups alike. Nightly show was always very good. Michael Jackson performance was the best out of what I got to see. Beach party was good too (we went after the wedding!) POOLS- well maintained, clean always and maybe a tile or two were missing but certainly nothing to write about. SPA- I was fortunate to go 3 times. Hyrdro circuit was fun! 9 of us girls went and had a great time. At one point I was told in a quite firm manner that I was being too loud by one of the staff. My friends did not seem to think so and we were there with only one other couple at the time. Either way of course I was compliant however I think he could have been a little nicer about it. HAIR AND MAKEUP WEDDING- Adriana did an amazing job. If you do not speak Spanish, no worries but make sure and have pictures to communicate exactly what you like. Brides know what they want for their big day. Even maybe google translate your questions/wishes. HONEYMOON CEREMONY- 3 hours total. Included in wedding package. Hot Stone Massage was best I've ever had, chromotherapy was relaxing as well as the jacuzzi and waterbed massage. BEACH- yes its rocky, there are two small soft sand parts which you can use for entering and exiting and yes, there are many chairs with mini palapas (straw huts) as well as bars but this is by no means a mile long stretch of beach. Nothing wrong with that but if that's what you like then this may not be for you. Beach volleyball and football is there too! Planning this trip was a breeze and that is thanks to Diana, our wedding coordinator and Rodrigo who helped us before Diana came in. She made sure every detail was on point and to our standards and liking. Her email replies were prompt. We met with her two days before the wedding to finalize the itinerary. Everything was amazing and above and beyond what I expected. She made planning a event in a country I had never been to stress free. Please reach out if you have any more specific questions regarding anything. I would recommend and stay again at the Grand Sirenis without hesitation. Muchas gracias for everything Grand Sirenis staff, we will be back someday!More
Good but lots of improvements
Arrived at the hotel early evening and took us 95minutes to check in!! No sorry or apologise it took so long, just slow staff who tried to sell everything to everyone checking in. Be warned that they try to sell "upgraded rooms" to you in order to be closer to you but all rooms are around the same distance. The entertainment every night in the theatre is so loud it carries across the whole resort, so don't expect to be asleep by mid night! We paid for $40 for a safety deposit box for the week but it didn't even work but they refused to give us our money back Although the buffet restaurant had lots of choice do not expect 5* food - it was very salty If you like privacy in the bathroom you can forgot that as everything is open planned. The spa was at an additional cost even to use the pool and you had to book well in advance Generally the staff were polite and courteous although a little slow Lots of sun beds around the pools and beach so never a problem getting one Rooms specious and cleaned every day Large resort so things to do Entertainment was of good standard but the theatre was so popular we did have to stand some nights to watch Overall it was a nice hotel but be prepared to get served very slowly and pay extra for things although all inclusive More
Relaxing retreat away from the real world
What a wonderful slice of paradise. Warm and relaxing with beautiful beaches, coral reefs, amazing spa, and dolphins too! The food at the specialty restaurants was amazing, but the buffets were hit or miss. Hope to come back again with our kids.More
