Victoria holidays serve up secluded beaches, colossal waterfalls and authentic food spots on Grenada’s quieter north side.
Hello hidden gem
Picture this. You’re kicking off your flip-flops, sinking your feet into golden sand and stepping into the Caribbean Sea – and there are more local fishermen around than tourists. That’s what you’ll get in the big but sleepy town of Victoria – it might look a similar size to the capital, St George’s, but it’s much less crowded. In fact, only 2,000 people call the town home.
Pack your beach bag
Here, you’re pretty close to off-the-beaten-path spots on the north coast, like Sauteurs Beach, which lines up vivid green palm trees and bright turquoise waters that make for the perfect post-sunbathing swim. But if you want to tick the island’s most popular places – like Grand Anse Beach – off your bucket list, be our guest. It only takes an hour to get to its two-mile stretch of picture-perfect sand.
Daytrips to the capital
Staying away from the crowds doesn’t have to mean missing out on the capital city of Saint George’s, which is less than an hour away by car. Head there to see Fort George, with its working cannons that date back to the 1800s, and round off the day in a traditional Caribbean restaurant. You’ve got to try Grenada’s national dish, oil down – it’s a hearty one-pot stew made from salted meat, starchy breadfruit, creamy coconut and spices.
Sugar, spice and all things nice
Grenada’s known as the Isle of Spice, thanks to its volcanic soil that makes for great nutmeg, cinnamon and clove growing. Learn all about it just 10 minutes from town at the Gouyave Nutmeg Processing Station, where locals make the rust-coloured powder that features in many popular Grenadian dishes, like nutmeg ice-cream. Got a sweet tooth? Pop to the Diamond Chocolate Factory – it’s a short walk from town, and sells chocolates, smoothies and even beer made with organic cocoa beans.
