There’s more to La Romana City holidays than hotels and beaches – scuba diving and hiking are also on the itinerary.
Unexplored terrain
La Romana City is a well-known tourist spot plotted along the south-east coast of the Dominican Republic. Its popularity shot up thanks to Casa de Campo – a massive mega-resort with golf courses and a beach. However, most don’t venture beyond the hotel beach, port, or golf courses to see what the city has to offer – there are many more sandy beaches to explore and national parks full of nature and caves. Plus, if you go between October and January, you could watch a game of baseball at the stadium in the city.
Hidden beaches
Most people who stay at La Romana city will spend their days on Minitas Beach – which is about a 20-minute drive from the city centre. However, this sandy stretch is only for those staying in the hotels that back onto it and is often a little busier. If you want to get away from the crowds, then Playa Caleta is the same distance away – it’s a rocky beach with views out to Catalina Island. If you still want the sand but without the crowds, drive 30 minutes to Dominicus Beach. Here you’ll find soft white sands, palm trees and beachfront bars.
Caves, snorkelling and hiking
The Cotubanama National Park is a must-see when you’re staying in La Romana City – you can get there in a 30-minute drive. It covers 50 miles of coastline and all of the island of Saona, including the water in between – so it’s fair to say you probably won’t be able to cover all of it. Within the park, you’ll find hiking tracks carved out of dense forest, hidden caves – with impressive original Taino petroglyphs – and hidden underwater lagoons. It’s also a great spot for snorkelling and scuba diving – the protected waters are home to the likes of dolphins, manatees and tropical fish.
