Our family holidays to Antigua add fancy hotels with fussy-eater-friendly dining scenes to the island’s array of picture-perfect beaches.
Antigua’s A-grade beaches
Like the rest of its Caribbean Island neighbours, Antigua isn’t shy when it comes to standout shorelines. Sofa-soft sandy beaches can be found around the island’s entire coastline. And, since you can go from the top of Antigua to the bottom in under 40 minutes’ drive, you’ve got plenty of options to choose from. Head to the island’s west coast and you’ll find five-star swathes like Jolly Beach and Coco Beach, whereas Hodges Bay – in northern Antigua – lines up a few quiet coves with pond-still water.
Best of British
Antigua’s also known for its link to a legend in British history, Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson – the hero of the Battle of Trafalgar. In the 1700s, he was stationed on a ship in Antigua, which at the time served as a British colony. You can learn about this history during a trip to English Harbour, on the southeast coast. Here, you’ll find the UNESCO-protected Nelson’s Dockyard, where you can explore some of the original 18th-century buildings.
Say hello to St John’s
No trip to Antigua’s complete without an amble around the capital city, St John’s. It’s the biggest settlement on the island, and is home to everything from pastel-painted Colonial houses and souvenir stores to a couple of cathedrals and a seafront fort. The latter, Fort James, was built in the 18th century to protect the city from pirates and privateers.
