Hotel Der Waldhof

This is altogether a very good hotel. Rooms are spacious and spotlessly clean, great food and a homely feel. As a vegetarian I can say the food was good if a tiny bit limited at breakfast. Meals are buffet style and breakfast did offer a wide variety of cereal, yoghurt, cheese, cold meats, cooked eggs and bacon, fresh waffles, pastries and bread. Plenty of choice but some cooked tomatoes as a hot veggie choice would have been good. You can make a packed lunch at breakfast to take with you if out exploring or let reception know if you are taking lunch in the hotel. Lunch never had a vegetarian option other than salad but nothing to complain about. Evening meals are buffet and you advise the chef if you are a vegetarian and the meal is prepared. Over the 11 days there were only evenings that it wasn’t to my liking but overall excellent variety. There are two pools and the indoor one has direct access to the garden so best of both worlds and perfect if it’s a rainy day. Pool towels are provided and the whole area is well maintained and again spotless. Excellent comfortable beds and a very quiet hotel. Guests were mainly Austrian, German, French / Swiss, Dutch and Scandinavian. Staff all work hard and mention to the chefs, Ildiko, George in the bar and the cleaners. However everyone we encountered were pleasant and polite. We were rarely addressed in English but as a minority in the hotel, that’s fair enough. Games available behind reception and paddles for table tennis. Free bikes, which were in good condition can be taken which is a good addition. We stayed in the new wing and the room had a beautiful view from the balcony. One note there is no AC and the first few nights of our stay were uncomfortably warm. Bath towels in the room are not great but otherwise everything was very good. The location in my opinion is ideal as out of town. An easy 10 min walk downhill and 71 bus can take you up or down if needed. Perhaps elderly quests would find the walk challenging. Lots to do in the area and close to the lifts for walking and exploring. Having been to Austria a few times before, I’d chose this hotel again without question but found Zell itself, as a town, lacking a little in that Austrian authenticity. Final mention goes to the goats and Carlos the donkey and Puppy the pony. They belong to the neighbouring hotel but the perimeter fence allows lots of opportunity to say hello. We loved giving them an apple or some grass and enjoyed watching them and the goats from the balcony. Carlos had a bray every morning at 7 but we didn’t mind at all. Overall an excellent stay.
