Best time to go to Vietnam

In Vietnam, each region has its own microclimate. While the south is warm all year round, the north cools down in winter, with temperatures hovering between 15 and 20°C. Generally speaking, there are two main seasons – a wet summer between May to September and a dry winter from November to April. That said, it’s hardly a British winter – on the central and southern coast, temperatures rarely drop below the mid-20s, and clear skies and sunshine are the norm. The hottest months are March and April, when the mercury can top 40°C. This is accompanied by showers, although they tend to come in short, mid-afternoon downpours.

Just to let you know, shops and restaurants may be closed or have reduced opening hours around Vietnamese New Year. This is normally at the end of January or the end of February, but the date changes every year.

Passports & Visas

You don’t need a visa to visit Vietnam, if you’re staying for 45 days or less, but you must have a valid passport that has an expiry date at least 6 months after the date you arrive, at least 2 blank pages and no damage to the document. For longer holidays, you’ll need to get a visa before you travel. You can get this from the Vietnamese Embassy in London or apply for an e-visa online through the online portal. Alternatively, you can apply for a Visa Approval Letter beforehand, and bring this with you to get a visa at the airport in Vietnam.

If you're travelling to Vietnam via Tan Son Nhat Airport (SGN), we recommend completing the digital arrival card before you travel. It's currently optional, but it's best to get it done within three days of departure.
