With lively markets, colourful architecture and an impressive street food scene – plus some of Thailand’s best beaches in daytripping distance – holidays to Phuket Town are filled with variety.
Lots of cities claim to be a mix of cultures, but not many are as obvious as Phuket Town. The city sprung up during Phuket’s 19th-century tin-mining boom, when merchants from China, Portugal and Malaysia all laid down roots here. Nowadays, as you walk around its sun-drenched streets, you’ll spot colourful, colonial-style buildings everywhere you turn, with shades of turquoise, mustard yellow, pink and blue all around. The historic Sino-Portuguese buildings in the old quarter give it a distinctive appearance, and while some of the small cafés spilling onto pavements lend a European feel, you’ll know from the lively markets and scent of freshly cooked noodles that the street food stalls are distinctly Thai.
