Holidays to the Phi Phi Islands showcase some of Thailand’s premier destinations – think snorkel-friendly reef-filled waters in the Hat Nopparat Thara-Ko Phi Phi National Park, Instagram-ready beachfronts and plenty of colourful nightlife.
The Phi Phi Islands sit in the Andaman Sea, around 25 miles south‑east of Phuket, and their landscapes blend the best of Mauritius‑style beaches with the dramatic cliffs you’d expect in Vietnam. Expect ice‑white sands, bright‑blue waters, and a backdrop of towering limestone cliffs and jungle‑clad hills. The main island, Phi Phi Don, is the only inhabited hub, centred on the twin bays of Ton Sai and Ao Loh Dalum, where beach bars, cafés and guesthouses cluster between the curves of the coastline.
The Phi Phi Islands are known mainly for their starring role in the thriller film The Beach, starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Most of the movie was filmed on the archipelago’s second-biggest island, Phi Phi Leh. Book a tour of the island from Phi Phi Don and visit spots that featured in the movie, including Maya Bay – home to the film’s signature belt of sand. Additional must-sees include the pale green Pileh Lagoon and the swift nests in Viking Cave.
The waters surrounding the Phi Phi Islands are packed with marine life, making them a magnet for snorkellers and scuba divers. One of the top spots is Shark’s Point on Phi Phi Don, a reef-rich area where you can swim in waters that are home to some of the islands’ largest residents, including blacktip reef sharks and leopard sharks. Sea turtles are regular visitors here too, and the nearby Koh Mai Pai and Koh Yung coral gardens offer even more colourful underwater exploring.
