The US Virgin Islands might be American by name, but not by nature.
This collection of islands flies the American flag, but it’s got all the Caribbean credentials. They’re part of the Virgin Islands archipelago, to the west of the British Virgin Islands. Our cruises to the US Virgin Islands drop anchor in Charlotte Amalie, on the island of St Thomas, and Frederiksted, on St Croix. Each of the idyllic islands has its own personality. But they’ve got one thing in common – textbook-tropical beaches with Curacao-blue waters. After all, there’s a reason this place is dubbed America’s Paradise.
The weather plays its part in the archipelago’s appeal – the mercury rarely drops below 20°C. This means sunbathing’s high on the agenda. Magens Bay Beach leads the way on the isle of St Thomas, just 10 minutes’ drive from Charlotte Amalie. Picture a travel-mag-worthy crescent of talc-white sand. Meanwhile, the town’s main street is shoulder-to-shoulder with fancy jewellery shops. St Croix, on the other hand, is the largest, but also most peaceful of the islands. Here, rum distillery and rainforest tours top the to-do list.
Just so you know, ESTAs are required when visiting The US Virgin Islands. To find out more please visit the ESTA website.
Charlotte Amalie’s the capital of the island of St Thomas. Christopher Columbus first landed here in 1493, and since then everyone from Blackbeard to the US Navy have used it as a base. It’s known for its deep natural harbour, Danish architecture and Fort Christian – the oldest building in the Virgin Islands archipelago, which is now an antique-filled museum.
TUI River Cruises tick off everything from big-name cities like Budapest and Vienna to barely-trodden bankside beauties, like Cochem and Durnstein – via iconic waterways including the Rhine and Danube. Best of all? Flights, transfers and meals with drinks are all included.
