Capital
Oranjestad
Cruises to Aruba serve up talcum-powder-white sand and brightly coloured buildings.
Floating in the Caribbean, Aruba’s the A of the ABC islands – B’s for Bonaire and C’s for Curacao. It’s bagged the best beaches of the lot, and majors in bucket-and-spade days, rainbow-painted coral reefs, and colonial throwbacks in its towns and cities. Our cruises to Aruba stop at Oranjestad, the island’s capital. It’s got a glitzy look about it, but look further than its giant malls and chic boutiques and you’ll discover a rather charming town. It’s got a mix of colonial features – like butter-yellow window shutters – and Dutch influences, such as gabled houses and angular squares.
Oranjestad majors in retail therapy. Make sure you hit up Caya G F Betico Croes, the capital’s main shopping drag. Here, you’ll find everything from clothes to cameras. Elsewhere, you’ll find the cutesy Royal Plaza Mall, which is painted candyfloss-pink – it’s great for shopping and Instagramming. Away from the shops, the city’s best beaches include Palm Beach – an ice-white beauty that fronts the island’s high-rise hotels – and Eagle Beach, which serves up a giant dose of peace-and-quiet. The weather in Aruba hovers at the 30°C mark year-round, so you can roll out the towel no matter what month you visit.
Nowhere showcases Aruba’s Dutch roots quite like Oranjestad. With its gable-topped houses and colonial clock towers, the island’s capital is like a little slice of Amsterdam. It’s got some typically Caribbean credentials, too – expect cushiony sands that stretch on for miles, and underwater spots that are great for snorkelling.
TUI River Cruises tick off everything from big-name cities like Budapest and Vienna to barely-trodden bankside beauties, like Cochem and Durnstein – via iconic waterways including the Rhine and Danube. Best of all? Flights, transfers and meals with drinks are all included.
