Liege is Belgium’s fifth-largest city, and a bit of an under-the-radar gem on the country’s tourism scene. The most famous sight here is Montagne de Beuren – a flight of 374 steps leading up to one of the city’s best viewpoints. If you don’t fancy giving your thighs a workout, you can admire it from the bottom, then head off to check out the rest of Liege’s must-sees, instead. They include the imposing St Paul’s Cathedral, the unique, arc-shaped train station and a small crop of museums. Plus, it’d be rude not to grab a Belgian waffle while you’re here – the Liege version is made with beaded sugar, which gives the dough a sweet crunch and a unique, caramelised flavour.
