Holidays to Camp de Mar take you to a classy resort on Majorca's south-west coast, where the golf courses are as chichi as the shops. No wonder Tom Cruise likes it here.
This quiet little resort, perched on Majorca’s south-west corner, has attracted the famous since Rudolph Valentino graced the screen. Even today, it’s a hit with the likes of Claudia Schiffer and Tom Cruise, both of whom have owned property round these parts. A big draw is the white-sand beach – it’s rated as one of the best on the island, and even Spain.
The main beach comes with 180 metres of super-soft sands and clear, turquoise waters that are great for watersports. Straw umbrellas give the beach an exotic feel, but the real highlight is the little island – reached via a wooden bridge – that’s home to a restaurant and cocktail bar. And surrounding this golden stretch are cliffs and pine-clad hills.
Majorca attracts around 300,000 golfers each year, and one reason they come is the 18-hole Golf de Andratx course. It’s just a few minutes’ walk from the resort, and has been voted one of the best in Europe. There are also coastal walks to nearby Cap Andratx and Cap des Llamp – on the way you’ll get a bird’s-eye view of Puerto de Andratx’s exclusive harbour.
It’s just half an hour's drive to Palma, the island capital. The vast Roman Catholic cathedral is the top attraction here. Begun in 1229, it took nearly 400 years to finish. You’ve also got the Es Baluard contemporary art gallery, complete with works by Picasso, Cézanne and Magritte. There’s an old town lined with smart boutiques, while the La Llonja area has the best bars and restaurants.
