An authentic Spanish town is the setting for San Pedro de Alcantara holidays. It teams signature Costa del Sol sandy beaches with daytrips to Ronda and Marbella. The place has a proper Spanish soul, and with typically low crowd levels, it’s often described as the region’s best-kept secret.
San Pedro de Alcantara’s a relaxed town that looks right at home on a postcard – think narrow streets with Spanish shops and restaurants, plus an idyllic local church square. Just up the road, you have a dose of Puerto Banus and Marbella glamour, and if you’re an outdoorsy type, you’ll want to have Sierra de Ronda’s mountainous national parks on your radar. These are great spots for Andalucia hiking and birdwatching. The whole region has quiet authenticity and lots of places where you can simply wander along and soak it all in, like Boulevard San Pedro and Parque de los Tres Jardines.
San Pedro de Alcantara’s Blue Flag beaches are dusted with spotless sand. Jet-skis and pedalos glide above the waves, and there’s a tree-shaded promenade with bars and restaurants to fuel up in behind Playa de San Pedro. The beach vibes are high all along the coastline – there are chiringuitos (AKA local beach bars) serving fresh fish, plus you’re nearby Puerto Banus’ beach clubs and laidback alternative areas like Estepona. Speaking of Estepona, Playa del Cristo sunsets are pretty special.
Ernest Hemingway’s favourite Spanish city – Ronda – is famously home to the El Tajo gorge vertical drop and the oldest bullring in Spain. Its Moorish architecture, Arab Baths and Mondragon Palace earn Ronda daytrips a place at the top of any list of San Pedro de Alcantara excursions.
Excursions from San Pedro de Alcantara come by the bucketload. Gibraltar’s rock is under an hour’s drive away, and Mijas pueblo blanco (white village) is about the same distance. Further Spanish daytrips to Seville and Granada are on the cards, and if you want to spread your wings even wider, you can even have a look at Morocco ferry trips. On the flip side, if you’d rather not travel too far, some classic Costa del Sol resort attractions are Basilica de Vega del Mar and the Roman Baths of Las Bóvedas.
