Holidays to Playa de San Juan are defined by the peaceful white-sand beach that runs alongside it, but if you drive for 15 minutes you've got the historic city of Alicante to explore.

The best of the Costa Blanca

Although the cities of Alicante and Valenica are within easy reach, Playa de San Juan itself is beautifully quiet. It’s easy to see why the area is called the Costa Blanca. The lengthy white-sand beach is the jewel in Playa de San Juan’s crown. Spanning eight kilometres, it’s lined with restaurants and beach bars, so you’ll barely have to set foot off the sand for lunch or a drink.

Neighbouring Alicante

A 15-minute drive along the coast will get you to the port city of Alicante. Here, you’ll find a lively restaurant and nightlife scene and plenty of historical sites. You can take a boat trip out to Isla Tabarca from Alicante Marina, too. The waters surrounding the island are a protected marine reserve, so they’re a great place to snorkel. The island also has an interesting story to tell. It was a haven for pirates until the end of the 18th century.

More than just beaches

Aside from the watersports at Playa de San Juan, there are plenty of activities within 30 minutes’ drive. Head out to the town of Villajoyosa to tour its famous Valour Chocolate Factory. Then, work off the calories with a trek up Maigmó Mountain. Experienced climbers can attempt the full route, while beginners can drive part of the way up. During your hike, you’ll have some great views out to sea. Alternatively, the Rio Safari Park and the Terra Mítica theme park are also 30 minutes down the road.

Escape act

The peaceful beach isn’t your only opportunity to escape. Room escape games are a popular activity around Playa de San Juan. There are three highly-rated companies within a 15-minute drive, so you can take your pick. These games, which involve being locked in a room and having to solve clues to get out, are a fun way to give your brain a workout on holiday.
