New kid on the block

This town – plotted on the coast in Cadiz – was once famous for its tuna fishing town, but was abandoned in the 1970s when things got quiet. Since then, it’s grown into a popular tourist spot, thanks to its seven-kilometre sandy stretch – Playa de la Barrosa – where luxe seafront hotels and apartments line the promenade. The one-way road, which runs outside of the peninsula, ferries tourists to and from restaurants, cafés, bars and fishing jetties.

Watersport winds

The weather and currents here make Blue Flag Playa de la Barrosa the ideal spot for sailing, surfing and wakeboarding. It’s less than a five-minute drive away from the centre of town and rolls out for miles. As the coastline curves, the beach changes name to Sancti Petri Beach – it’s got sweeps of sand dunes, heaps of watersports on offer, and nature lovers can canoe and paddleboard around marshes for a spot of bird-and-wildlife watching.

Golf galore

Golf fanatics have plenty of courses to choose from around here. But, two 18-hole numbers that really stand out live at The Royal Novo Sancti Petri Golf Club – it’s less than five minutes’ drive from both the beach and the town centre. They’re renowned for their design – they’ve got broad fairways, tree-dotted roughs, sunken sand bunkers and big lagoon-shaped lakes. And, of course, one of the biggest perks of playing here are the views of the Atlantic Ocean.
