La Fontanilla holidays

Conil de la Frontera, Spain

La Fontanilla holidays fall firmly into the laidback category. Think golden sands, seafront eateries and a cosy town.

A hidden gem

This under-the-radar town might just be one of southern Spain’s best-kept secrets. Loads of Andalucian hallmarks are in place here – think whitewashed houses and traditional restaurants serving up local dishes like fresh seafood and Iberian pork. And it’s all nestled into a cosy corner by the Atlantic Ocean, which is kept at arm’s length by a leggy stretch of golden sand that rolls out for miles.

Waterfront walks

A spawling stretch of sand and a handful of restaurants mean La Fontanilla’s ideal for an away-from-it-all break. If you fancy ramping things up a little, though, take a gentle stroll along the coast to the next town of Conil de la Frontera. Its old town is a maze of narrow lanes, sprinkled with restaurants, cafés and tapas bars. And if you head here at the right time, you can climb to the top of Torre de Guzman for sunset views over rooftops and out to sea. This restored, whitewashed tower was once part of the town’s medieval fortifications.

Dozens of daytrips

The town’s bagged a great spot for getting out and exploring Andalucia. It’s just a 45-minute drive along the coast to Cadiz, with its Medieval old town, whitewashed buildings and a striking cathedral. Jerez is a similar distance away – the city’s famous for its sherry production and its racing circuit. Los Alcornocales Natural Park, meanwhile, is also less than an hour’s drive away. This sprawling stretch of rugged mountains and wild forest is one of the largest cork forests in Europe.
