Holidays to Chipiona give you an authentic taste of Spain – it's popular with the locals, and has lots of tapas bars.
A taste of southern Spain
Chipiona’s a picturesque beach town on Spain's southern coast, sitting at the mouth of the Guadalquivir River. This place gives you a true taste of slow-paced Spanish life – it might not be one of the country’s tourism hotspots, but it’s popular among locals for holidays close to home, thanks to its lively marina and top-notch food and drink scene. It’s postcard-pretty, with palms swaying gently by the beach, and meandering side-streets where whitewashed buildings are studded with balconies and potted plants. You've got flurries of tapas bars serving fried fish and local sherries, and to top it all off, there are a few fine-sand beaches at your fingertips.
Promenade wandering
Right by the seafront, there’s a pretty promenade scattered with benches, palm trees and beachside bars – this spot's great for drinks as the sun sets. At one end, you’ll come across Chipiona Lighthouse, which is the tallest lighthouse in Spain standing at almost 70m, and you can climb to the top for panoramic skyline views. Back on the ground, when you wander the town centre’s maze of streets you’ll find an old town bursting with restaurants and wineries. If you’re partial to a glass of vino or two, add Despacho de Vinos César Florido to your to-visit list – it's the oldest winery in Chipiona, known for its flavoursome wines and sherries.
Historical architecture
Two of the town’s most impressive buildings are churches – you've got the Santuario de Regla and the Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de la O. The first is right by the beach, and was originally a castle fortress. It's full of history, dating all the way back to the 14th century. The latter's a gothic church from the 1500s. If you head inside, you'll be wowed by grand archways and a huge golden altarpiece. Listen out for the chime of its bells, too – they ring out a particularly alluring sound.
