    You get a big choice of pools at this luxury hotel, along with superb views across the harbour, sea and mountains.

    You’ll find this upscale hotel on a hillside overlooking the Bay of Funchal. The views are great, and it’s central, too – it’s a 15-minute stroll into town, while the lido is a 10-minute walk away.

    This place gives you four pools, as well as a separate children’s pool. There’s a choice of restaurants, too. As well as the main buffet, there’s a grill restaurant.

    Disappointing for a so-called premier location

    This was not a cheap holiday so we expected a high standard but received a standard of treatment from the hotel staff, as a whole, which was indifferent. The Junior Suite was roomy and the beds were comfortable but the choice of furnishings for the balcony - which did have a superb view - spoiled the value of the balcony being cane or wicker and downright uncomfortable. Supplies of milk, tea and coffee in the room were not replenished. Breakfast on the terrace was a good experience. Being harassed by Pestana Club salesmen was not. We were disappointed that the gym did not open until 09.00. The hotel pools are good and the food, drink and service at the Poolside Bar exemplified how poor the service was in other areas, for they were excellent. The buffet was uninspiring.

    the hotel self is centric located, can go walking distance to downtown, restaurants, and other facilities. We booked a Junior Suite, was spacious but very old style, need somw refresh! the pillows were a NIGHTMARE, very uncomfortable, we asked for pillow menu but did not have, i mean 5*hotel and without pillow men?!!! seriously?.... the stuff VERY UNFRIENDLY at breakfast, horrible! we asked for a tea and they answered we should make it self... this is not correct service in a 5* hotel.... would NOT RECOMMEND IT! THERE ARE BETTER OPTIONS TO STAY THERE.

    This was the latest of many visits to the Carlton and we found the hotel to be as good as ever. From the welcome at reception, even though we were two hours early, to the bar service and breakfast we had no complaint. Some have said that the public areas are dated but for us that is the charm of the place. I would agree with those who say for a five star hotel the bathroom towels are a little thin and worn but otherwise our room on the third floor overlooking the pool was perfect. Two floors up for breakfast and two down for the pool area. Breakfast buffet choice was good, especially when taken on the terrace but I do wish they would serve fresh coffee instead of using d-i-y machines! I cannot comment on any other meals service as we always dine out in the evening at one of the many local restaurants It is good advice to book a room on the ocean side of the hotel to avoid noise from the bars to the front of the hotel. We will be returning next year.

    The Pestana Carlton was superb, the views from all around the hotel are just stunning. The weather is absolutely fantastic. The staff are super friendly and can't do enough for you, the food and drink was spot on and I would highly recommend this hotel.

    We have visited this hotel many times and will continue to return. We can not fault anything. Fabulous location, wonderful staff and great food. The pool area is immaculate and the attendants work hard to make sure all guests are comfortable, with plenty of sun beds and umbrellas. We have stayed here twice this year and will be back next year!
