Holidays to Sveti Stefan are all about beach days with one of Montenegro’s most famous sights as the backdrop.
Look up images of Montenegro, and snaps of Sveti Stefan will likely be among the first to show up in your search results. Yep – this teeny town you’ve probably never heard of is actually one of the country’s most photographed spots. It’s got a famous Medieval island to thank for that. And with better-known Budva just 15 minutes’ drive down the road, holidays here are about more than just soaking up the scenery – retail therapy, harbourside meals and big nights out are all on the agenda.
The island just off Sveti Stefan’s coast is thought to have been built in the 15th century, to defend against Turkish pirates. These days, it’s a luxury hotel. And while you can’t go inside, you can still admire its Medieval, red-roofed buildings from the public beach on the mainland or one of the viewpoints further up the hillside. Sveti Stefan Viewpoint is the closest of the bunch, but the higher you go, the more screensaver worthy your photos will be.
Like a lot of Montenegro’s beaches, the ones in Stevi Stefan have a subtle salmon-pink hue. Pair that with water the colour of gemstones and best-in-class views of that Medieval island, and you’ve got some serious reasons to free up some space in your camera roll. In terms of things to do here, it’s all about pitching up and working on your tan. Stroll down towards the narrower end of the pebbles, and you’ll find a beach bar and a restaurant, too (ordering seafood is a must).
