Peaceful beaches, a rocky backdrop and a hearty helping of Greek hospitality is the chill-out formula on holidays to Kambos.
A Greek island hideaway
The lazy hush of the sea is your soundtrack at this unspoilt slice of Samos, a Greek island known for its authentic, back-to-basics appeal. Around 50 minutes from Samos Town, Kambos is perfect if you’re hoping to worship the sun in peace and quiet, feast on freshly caught fish in local tavernas, and explore deserted coves by boat.
The square root of adventure
If Kambos feels like a secret retreat, that’s because it is – the village is home to a hideaway once used by the mathematician Pythagoras. A hike up the jasmine-dotted trails behind Kambos brings you to cluster of sea-view caves. Legend has it, Pythagoras used them to flee from a ruling tyrant, taking his teaching ‘underground’. While there isn’t too much to see inside the caves, the rocky trail offers a nice challenge for keen hikers, where sea-plus-mountain views equals postcard scenery squared.
Beach to their own
A wide, uncrowded sandy beach is what draws most to this remote corner of the island. The diamond-clear waters are often as still as a mill pond, making it a safe spot for swimming. Watched over by the rocky Mount Kerkis – a rugged, monastery-dotted volcano – the sheltered cove keeps solitude-seekers coming back for more, with plenty of room to claim your pitch on the sand.
Explore more of Samos
While Kambos is tucked away on the quiet south-western shores of the island, it only takes an hour to drive to the opposite side, where the lively Samos Town is located. It’s a great option for a daytrip, and the journey there takes you past castaway-style coves and colourful fishing villages. You can also visit nearby Pythagorion, where whitewashed cottages sit pretty behind a historic harbour, and fishing boats bob between waterside tavernas with their catch of the day.
