Sami holidays
Jump to sections
Holidays to Sami promise harbourfront dinners, island walking trails and a beach that's been seen on the big screen.
Scenery good enough for Hollywood
Sami sits in a horseshoe-shaped bay on the east coast of Kefalonia. It’s got a bright white pebbled beach and pine tree panoramas. The harbour bobs with traditional fishing boats. In fact, the town’s so beautiful it was chosen as the main filming location in the movie Captain Corelli’s Mandolin.
Back to nature
As Kefalonia’s second biggest port, Sami’s often busy with boats. Sail out to the island of Ithaca, said to be the home of Greek hero, Odysseus. It rains a lot here in the winter, which means thriving wildlife and some super-green scenery. As such, it’s got a sterling reputation for its walking trails which criss-cross the landscape.
A mysterious lake
Sami’s also within range of the mysterious Melissani Lake, which you'll find a five-minute drive west of the town centre. It’s in a cavern that collapsed thousands of years ago, and you can explore the entire thing during a cruise across the lake. The best time to go is around lunchtime – when the sun’s rays hit the water they create an electric blue light that reflects off the cavern walls.
