Sami holidays are all about Kefalonia’s harbourfront dining scene and scenic Ionian island walking trails. Top sights here include Melissani Lake and Drogarati Cave.
Sami’s horseshoe-shaped bay is tucked away on the east coast of Kefalonia. When you stay here, you can explore Captain Corelli’s Mandolin filming locations, see Ionian pine tree panoramas and visit the white pebbled beach of Antisamos. As holiday resorts go, it’s a solid all-rounder where you can up the relaxation and get a glimpse of working island life.
Sami Port’s a maritime hub, with bobbing boats often filling the sapphire-hued waters. If you want to set sail, you can pick from a range of Ithaca island excursions – this place is said to be the home of Odysseus, a legendary Greek hero. Or, you can catch a ferry to Patras and Kyllini. If you’d rather venture inland, there are tonnes of Ionian landscape walking trails that snake through rugged green hills.
Sami town centre’s just a few minutes’ drive from Melissani Cave Lake’s geological caverns. This spot tops many lists of Kefalonia’s natural landmarks. It has electric-blue water reflections and is a great spot for subterranean boat cruises, making it a big hit with tourists. It’s also close to the Acropolis of Ancient Sami’s mountainside ruins – you can drive there in a few minutes or opt for a scenic hike instead.
