Corfu Town holidays centre you in the island’s UNESCO-listed capital, where historic architecture meets a thriving nightlife scene.
With Corfu Town’s old quarter as your base, you’ll have a labyrinth of cobbled streets, the famous Esplanade and Venetian coastal fortresses – helpfully called Old Fortress and New Fortress – on your doorstep. The 19th-century Liston arcade is another of the old town’s must sees. It’s edged with laidback bars and restaurants where you can sip a coffee or tuck into Greek fare for lunch while you people watch to your heart’s content.
You can easily pair sightseeing with sunbathing sessions here, thanks to Corfu Town’s position on the Ionian Sea coast. Mon Repos Beach sits right at the edge of the royal palace gardens it shares its name with. Just to the north, Faliraki Beach holds the title of Corfu Town’s oldest bathing spot, and it’s no wonder people have been flocking here for so long – the water’s crystal clear. If you’re up for venturing slightly further afield, a few minutes’ drive will get you to Dassia, with its long stretch of sand, or Kontokali Bay, where a big harbour’s the star.
The capital of Corfu’s brimming with historic sights, from Mon Repos Palace to St Spiridon’s Church, which is where the island’s patron saint is laid to rest. The church has an eye-catching bell tower, too. And if you fancy escaping the sun for a while, you can always dip in and out of the town’s museums – the Byzantine Museum of Corfu, the Museum of Asian Art and the Archaeological Museum are among the most highly recommended.
Don’t just see Corfu Town from land – take a boat trip for a new perspective. There are hourly, 10-minute ferries to nearby Vidos Island, which was once known as Corfu’s Alcatraz, but it’s now loved for its wild rabbits and secluded beaches. Another isle worth ticking off is Pontikonisi, AKA Mouse Island, which is a popular haunt for plane-spotting enthusiasts thanks to its proximity to Corfu’s airport. If you’d rather see what’s under the water, head out on a glass-bottom boat tour from nearby Barbati, or book an Ionian Sea snorkelling excursion.
