Holidays to Omis show you an authentic side to Croatia, where sandy beaches and adventure holiday activities come with a side of old-world architecture.

Where is Omis?

You’ll find Omis on Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast, at the mouth of the Cetina River, which splits the town in two. Rugged mountains and coral-coloured rooftops will be the backdrop to your holiday snaps here, while down on the seafront, a collection of bars and restaurants give you plenty of options when it comes to places to eat and drink. Outside of the town, a scattering of pretty villages make up the rest of the Omis Riviera.

Cetina River adventures

This place doesn’t have to try hard to attract adrenaline junkies – some of the top things to do include rafting and kayaking on the Cetina River, whizzing down a 700-metre-long, 150-metre-high zip line, and cliff jumping. The area’s mountainous terrain makes it a hotspot for rock climbing, as well.

Beaches and historical sights

If you prefer to keep to quieter activities while you’re on holiday, there’s always Omis’ 700-metre-long sandy beach, Velika Plaža. You won’t even need to wear yourself out to get there, because it’s right by the town centre. Other things worth adding to your sightseeing list include the town’s two fortresses – Mirabella and Starigrad – which offer panoramic views of the calm, shallow waters of the Adriatic Sea. They date back to the 12th to 14th century, when pirates ruled the roost here (that’s how Omis got its nickname, ‘Town of Pirates’).

Excursions from Omis to Split

Split holds the title of Croatia’s second-biggest city, and it’s only 30 minutes’ drive from Omis, so a daytrip here is a must. The city’s old town is a sightseer’s paradise, with ancient landmarks and Game of Thrones filming locations galore (top tip – you can book a tour that takes you to all of them). Split’s pretty Blue Flag beaches are always on hand for when you need a sit-down, too.
