Holidays to Jibacoa put first-rate diving and a long, uninterrupted beach at the centre of things.
Varadero, without the big-scale tourism – that’s how some would describe Jibacoa. This fishing village takes things back to basics, letting the feather-soft beach do all the talking. It’s in a handy location for getting about, as well, being equidistant between Havana and Varadero.
Imagine an idyllic Caribbean beach – chances are Jibacoa’s fits the description. This long stretch of eggshell-coloured sand is backed by a thick belt of greenery. You won’t find many restaurants and bars around, just sunbeds and trees. Plus, there’s a reef just off-shore, so grab a snorkel to spot rays, fish and coral.
Sightseeing in Havana
You can’t come to Cuba and bypass Havana. Luckily, Jibacoa’s just an hour’s drive from the country’s Cadillac-filled capital. Once you arrive, head straight for Old Havana, where cathedrals sit among age-old forts and bustling squares. Making a pit stop at one of Hemingway’s favourite bodegas is another must-do.
