From Gatwick, the flight path heads out over the Channel near Worthing. Then you'll cross over Normandy and fly down France's Atlantic coast to Biarritz. Crossing the Pyrenees, you'll then enter Spain to the east of Pamplona, and continue in a south easterly direction until you reach Alicante on the east coast.
Flights to Alicante are generally very affordable. You can't beat the rock bottom seat prices in the winter months, from November to February. Though you'll still find some great deals through the summer months, peak season for travel to Alicante is in August.
