Garachico holidays put history lovers in their element – this quiet coastal gem is one of Tenerife’s oldest towns.
A backstory for the history books
Garachico offers a slice of quiet coastal charm around an hour’s drive from the island’s capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The town was known for being the island’s first commercial port in the late 15th century, but a volcanic eruption changed all that in 1706. Grand palaces and lavish churches were wiped out by lava, and only some of the original architecture survived. So, when you walk the streets, you’ll see a mix of restored buildings, like the sunshine-yellow Convent of San Francisco – home to local sculptures, paintings and even a seashell collection – and the Castle of San Miguel, a seaside fortress that looks almost the same as it did when it was built in the 1550s.
Not your average beach break
The story continues down at the beach. All along this place’s coastline, you’ll find rugged shores shaped by volcanic activity. The natural pools of El Caleton take the rocks and pebbles typical of north Tenerife’s beaches, and add sheltered swimming spots formed when molten lava hit the waves over 300 years ago. Head there for a quick dip, or push the boat out with a snorkelling session – colourful fish, crabs and sea urchins hang around here. You’ve also got lots of ocean-view eateries serving up fresh seafood and just-shaken cocktails nearby, so you can sample the local cuisine while the sun sets.
Daytripping to Tenerife’s top spots
If you fancy a change of scenery, you’ve got some of the most popular spots on the island just a short drive away. Teide National Park – home to the highest peak in Spain – is less than an hour and a half from Garachico, and you can get to the Chinyero Volcano in under an hour. That’s two places hikers can add to their holiday itineraries. Plus, Siam Park – the biggest waterpark in Europe – is just over an hour away. Well worth the journey if you want to take on world-famous slides and wave pools.
