This town’s nickname is a pretty bold statement to back up, but it’s not just our opinion – Fornalutx has held the official title more than once in its recent history. No doubt the stone-built houses and cobbled streets – which have stood the test of time since the 13th century – have helped. And it’s topped off with its scenic spot in the heart of the Sierra de Tramuntana mountains.

Sweetly scented

Its looks are one thing, but what really sets this place apart is the sweet smell as you walk around the town. We’re being serious here – the village is fringed by rolling hills and vineyards, which are teeming with orange and lemon groves, and the sweet smell of the blossom wafts through the streets. You can add the scents of oleander shrubs, hibiscus and olive trees to the list as well – loads of the buildings are draped in them.

Tonnes of towns and cities around Spain have their own Plaza Espana, and Fornalutx is no different. However, don’t expect the kind of gargantuan public squares you’ll see in Madrid or Barcelona – the one in the heart of the village here is far cosier, and the narrow alleyways that surround it are lined with traditional tapas bars and local cafés.

Strolls to Soller

If you fancy venturing out a little, the nearby town of Soller gives this place a run for its money in the looks department. There’s a bit more going on when it comes to shops and restaurants, but the real standout is the centuries-old church in the heart of the town square – wait for the tram to glide past to get the perfect picture. And if you fancy a beach day, you can ride the tram straight down to the seafront.
