Holidays to Algeciras whisk you away to a port town on the south coast of Spain with tree-lined plazas and sea views.
Spanish specialities
Say hello to Algeciras – an industrial city nestled on the western side of the Bay of Gibraltar. It’s sometimes known as the South Gate of Europe, and flaunts a huge port, and it’s famous for its Spanish tapas and seafood. If you’re into your grub, you’re in for a treat here. There are lots of restaurants – some with sea views – serving up everything from shrimp tortillas and mixed olives to fresh lobster and battered ortiguillas. The dessert dish of bienmesabe is a must-try, too. It’s traditional in the region of Cádiz, and it consists of sweet and syrupy sponge cake, nuts and custard. The name literally translates to mean 'it tastes good to me', so you can bet it’ll be worth a try.
The other side of the bay
Hop in a cab and you can be at the city of Gibraltar, at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, in about 40 minutes. It’s a great pick for a day out, and it’s just at the other side of the bay. When you get there, you've got a handful of beaches to chill on, a few museums to browse and the impressive Rock of Gibraltar, where you get panoramic views of the bay from the summit. There’s also a cable car you can ride for 360-degree views of the city, and right by it, there are some botanical gardens that’re a lovely place for a stroll in the sun.
Head for the beach
Andalucia’s known for its sprawling, sandy beaches, and this postcode’s no exception. One of the most popular places for a day out with your toes in the sand is Playa de Getares – it's a wide stretch of beach by a promenade, with a few shops and bars at your fingertips. You’ll find shallow, gentle waters lapping the shore, making it a great spot for a knee-deep paddle or a splash with little ones.
