Modica holidays

Modica, Sicily, Italy

Mountain views and chocolate tasting are just a couple of things awaiting you on a holiday to Modica.

Baroque charm

Modica’s a listed UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the striking Baroque style of the architecture’s one of the first things you’ll notice when you visit. You could spend hours walking a maze of narrow streets and stairways, studded with detailed palaces and historical sculptures. The Cathedral of St George is one of Modica’s most famous buildings, and it’s nestled at the heart of the town. With gold-lined arches, delicate paintings and a towering organ, stepping inside is quite an experience. There’s a sundial etched on the ground beneath the dome, too, which was designed by mathematician Armando Perini in 1895.

Divine chocolate

The history of chocolate-making in Modica dates back more than 250 years. It’s something that’s helped put the town on the map, so there's no surprise it has its own chocolate museum, where you can learn about the origin and go on a range of tasting tours. The way the chocolate’s made here is unique – it's got no added fats, and it’s created in a cold-working process. The taste is rich and velvety, and it has a subtle crunch. You can try Modica chocolate in many forms, from flavoured bars to thick hot chocolate drinks – you'll be spoilt for choice when it comes to holiday souvenirs.

Bustling streets

One of the best ways to get a real feel for Modica is to wander down Corso Umberto, the main street in Modica Alta – the higher side of the town. It’s buzzing with souvenir shops, bars, museums and restaurants. Rows of balconies with olive-green shutters and plant pots draped with flowers help to set the scene here – it's the best place to treat yourself to some authentic Italian gelato or a hearty pasta dish. At the end of Corso Umberto, the pavement opens out into the Piazza Municipio square, where you’ll find an 18th-century clocktower.

Into the mountains

Modica’s nestled in a valley in the rolling Hyblaean Mountains, so you can expect picturesque views in all directions. You may be content sitting sipping a cappuccino and taking in the mountains from a distance, but if you fancy seeing them up-close, you could opt for a hike or an off-road bike ride. There are plenty of trails nearby, with varying difficulty levels, that give you widescreen views over the cream-coloured buildings that make up Modica.
