A lesser-trodden town

This quiet seaside town’s tucked away in Italy’s Puglia region – the southern part of the country, which forms the heel to its boot, and which the masses have yet to discover. Castellaneta Marina’s no exception, so locals and daytrippers make up the bulk of the tourists, who come here for the top-notch beaches, laidback atmosphere and traditional feel.

First-class beach scene

Swathes of powder-soft sand are plentiful in these parts, and some of them come with Blue Flag ticks to their name. And, because there’s so much elbow room along this part of the coast, they rarely get overcrowded. The main beach is named after the town, and beach clubs, bars and restaurants keep close company. For an even quieter affair, take a short stroll up to Spiaggia Termitosa. It’s right by the town’s train station, but with no bars, restaurants or sunbeds on tap, it’s a great spot for an away-from-it-all beach day.

Daytrips around Puglia

Most of Puglia’s picturesque towns and cities are within easy daytripping distance if you fancy venturing out. The region’s capital, Bari, is around an hour away by car, and with its harbourfront theatre and walled old town, it’s a culture vulture’s dream. The port city of Brindisi’s around an hour’s drive away, too, while it’s just an extra half-an-hour or so to reach Lecce – dubbed the Florence of the south.
