Holidays to Needhams Point offer a Caribbean break with a twist – this place has a first-class coastline and an interesting military history.

Barbados’ south-westernmost spot

Tropical blooms, ramshackle food carts and a beautiful coastline characterise this sleepy Bajan town. It’s set on a palm-cloaked peninsula on Barbados’ south-westernmost point, and once served as an important military base. There are reminders of its past everywhere you look – from the beachfront’s old barracks to the soldier cemetery on the outskirts of town.

A trio of beaches

Needhams Point is one of the most popular seaside towns on the island, thanks to a trio of perfect beaches. The northernmost and most peaceful is Pebbles Beach. To the south, meanwhile, you’ve got Drill Hall Beach, whose lively waves lure surfers and boogie boarders. Right in the middle is Needhams Point Beach, the busiest of the three. The milky sands of this one melt into a coral reef swarming with marine life.

Island highlights

Barbados is a small island, and Needhams Point puts you in a good position for exploring it. You can reach Bridgetown, the busy capital, in less than 15 minutes. A great duty-free shopping scene greets you here, plus you can tour the Mount Gay Rum factory to find out how the island’s liquid gold is made. St Lawrence is 15 minutes’ drive in the other direction. This is the place to head for harbour-side dining and late-night dancing.
