Why Order Travel Money With TUI?
How to make the most of your Romanian lei on holiday
If you’ve got a trip to Romania coming up, it’s time to start thinking about your spending money. Romania doesn’t use the euro like many other European countries. Instead, it uses its own currency, the Romanian leu or RON. There are 100 bani in the leu, and the plural is lei.
Although the exchange rate can vary of course, travellers in 2018 were getting around 5.2 lei to the pound.
Where to get the Romanian leu
The Romanian leu isn’t all that popular outside of Romania, so not everywhere will keep this currency in stock. It’s a good idea to order it from your nearest TUI Store.
You can exchange pounds in Romania, but it’s wise to get your money sorted before you go.
A Guide to using the Romanian leu abroad
Romania is quite an affordable country, so a budget of around 350 Romanian lei a day should be enough to enjoy yourself and see the sights.
You’ll find ATMs – called Bancomats in Romania – at banks, airports, and in shopping centres if you do need to get some money out, but they’re rare in Romania’s smaller towns. Credit cards aren’t always accepted in villages, either, so it’s always best to have some cash on you.
Tipping is not necessary in Romania, but is expected for good service in restaurants, and about 5 to 10% is standard.
