Why Order Travel Money With TUI?
Make the most of your Costa Rican colones on holiday
If you’re heading to sunny Costa Rica soon, stocking up on the right currency before you head off is a must. The colon – plural ‘colones’ – is the official Costa Rican currency. The exchange rate does vary, but as a rough guide, the average was around ₡780 to every £1 in 2018.
Where to get colones
US Dollars are also accepted in certain Costa Rican destinations, but the colon is the official currency and it’s more widely used.
It’s quick and easy to order and collect your travel money from TUI at your nearest TUI Store, or if you prefer, you can buy it from TUI online.
A guide to using colones in Costa Rica
On average, you can budget for around ₡30-40,000 per day to cover restaurant meals and activities. Your budget will depend on the level of luxury you’re looking for. If you’d like a more personal estimate of what your daily budget might look like, try our handy budget calculator here.
If you overspend a bit, and need more colones while you’re away, you can withdraw from cashpoints. Tipping in Costa Rica is not necessarily expected, but some restaurants add a 10% service charge to the bill. This is generally an acceptable tip, but it’s never a bad thing to leave a few extra colones for exceptional service.
