How to get the most from your Brazilian real on holiday

Are you planning a trip to Brazil? Then it’s time to start thinking about your travel money. The national currency for Brazil is the Brazilian real, with the plural being ‘reais’ in Portuguese. The real’s made up of 100 centavos, with coins up to 1R$ and notes from 2R$ upwards.

The exchange rate for British pounds to Brazilian real – BRL, frequently written as R$ – changes regularly, but the average rate for 2018 was R$5.01 to every £1.

Where can you get Brazilian reais for your trip?

Getting travel money for a holiday to Brazil is easy – just pop into your nearest TUI Store before you travel, or visit TUI online to buy your Brazilian reais.

A guide to using Brazilian reais

It might look like the English word ‘real’, but real is actually pronounced ‘hey-al’, and reais, is pronounced ‘hey-ice’.

Tipping in Brazil is not typically expected, but appreciated if you can afford to give a little extra for great service. Most restaurants and bars will include a 10% service charge at the end of your bill – ‘conta’ in Portuguese. This isn’t obligatory but is considered polite, unless you’ve had particularly bad service.

Depending on the type of experience you want, the suggested daily budget will differ. Aim to budget for around R$170 per day per person for a shoestring budget, and R$260 for a more luxurious adventure.
