Capital
Berlin
From folklore and mountain scenery to historic cities peppered with world-famous landmarks – holidays to Germany certainly have variety.
No two trips are the same on Germany holidays. Whether you fancy mountain trekking through the Black Forest, checking out the legendary nightlife on Hamburg's Reeperbahn, or delving into the country’s chequered past in Nuremberg’s historic sites, this European powerhouse is as varied as it gets.
With short flights from the UK (the whole country’s less than two hours away), German city breaks are a doddle, and each one’s distinctive. Have some steins at Munich’s world-famous beer halls, gawp at Cologne’s 1,000-year-old cathedral or marvel at Frankfurt’s New York-style skyline. The cities of Dresden, Dusseldorf and Nuremberg, meanwhile, have been restored to former glories after their eventful histories.
And of course, there’s Berlin, too. Germany’s capital city is a must-visit for shopping and sightseeing, while the likes of Brandenburg Gate, the Holocaust Memorial and the Berlin Wall’s graffitied remains, give nods to the city’s turbulent history.
There’s a different vibe entirely in the south-east state of Bavaria, where fairy tale castles and alpine chalets conjure up classic images of Germany. Bavaria’s capital, Munich, also hits the spot on the food and drink front. Local breweries and traditional beer halls rule the roost in the city, and its classic bratwurst sausage is worth a try while you’re in town.
