There are no beaches in Stuttgart. But if you want a taste of beach life, you can head to Sky Beach – a rooftop bar in the city centre. It’s got sand, deckchairs and a tropical cocktail menu.
While not technically a beach, you can still get your swimming and sunbathing kicks at the Mineralbad Berg thermal pools. These indoor and outdoor pools are fed by six natural springs, plus there’s a couple of saunas. Parkland surrounds the pools, so you’ve got plenty of space to relax.
Maultaschen is typical south-western German dish. It looks almost like a square dumpling, and is made from pasta sheets stuffed with spiced meat, spinach, breadcrumbs and onions. Originating in the 17th century, maultaschen is typically associated with Lent, when Catholics weren’t allowed to eat meat. These pasta pockets were a sneaky way to pack meat inside without anyone knowing.
If you’re after the German version of a Sunday roast, look no further than schweinebraten. This is a traditional German pork roast originating from Bavaria, but you can find it all over south Germany. The sliced pork is typically served with other German mainstays, like potato dumplings and either sauerkraut or rotkohl – red cabbage.
You can’t holiday this close to the Black Forest and not tuck into a slice of schwarzwalder kirschtorte – AKA Black Forest cherry cake. This popular German dessert consists of chocolate sponges that are smothered in whipped cream, then studded with brandy-filled cherries. To top it off, the baker will decorate it with more cream, more cherries, and chocolate shavings.
Another sweet treat from the Baden-Wurttemberg region is ofenschlupfer – a traditional type of bread pudding. It’s made with pieces of bread and apples that are smothered in a smooth custard. Then the pudding is speckled with raisins and flaked almonds, and served warm with a scoop of cream or ice-cream.
Germany’s wine industry is famous worldwide, and a trip to Stuttgart wouldn’t be complete without trying a local tipple or two. The city is surrounded by hills, and a bird’s eye view shows off the many wine-growing areas. The most popular vinos created in the area include Trollinger, Riesling, Kerner, Silvaner, and Muller-Thurgau.
