WHY CHOOSE A MAIN RIVER CRUISE?
The Main River branches off to the east of the Rhine, meandering its way through the centre of Germany. On a Main River cruise, you’ll get to see the nation’s half-timbered houses and grand palaces or castles in all their glory. Beer-swilling Bavarian villages and bustling, big cities both make themselves at home along its banks. Most of our Main cruises start or end in Frankfurt. This place is often dubbed Mainhattan for its New York-style skyline. But it teams the 21st-century high-rises with a super-cute main square, where the buildings have been carefully reconstructed to resemble those from the 14th and 15th centuries. Then there’s Nuremberg, where the historical hook’s much more recent. As well as its castle and city walls, you can visit the Nazi Party Rally Grounds and the Nuremberg Trial Courthouse. Pretty-as-a-picture villages are also on the cards. Bamberg has the UNESCO seal of approval, thanks to its frescoed town hall, green-towered cathedral and ancient churches. Plus, it’s famous for its smoked beer, which you can sample in one of its age-old breweries. And Miltenberg’s every inch the storybook Bavarian town, with half-timbered houses and a cobweb of cobbled streets. But one of the highlights of a Main River cruise in Germany has to be Wurzburg. This place is home to a show-stopping palace, the 18th-century Wurzburg Residence. The interiors are even more gawp-worthy than the Baroque exterior, thanks to a sprawling fresco and an extravagant staircase.Main river cruises
