Holidays to Estellenchs take you to a quiet corner of Majorca, where tradition and charm are delivered in equal measure.
Life on the go-slow
Zoom in on north-western Majorca on a map, and Estellenchs will suddenly appear as a tiny dot in the middle of the countryside. This traditional village is about as off-the-beaten-track as you can get, despite being part of the most tourist-trodden island in the Balearics. Whether you’re up for hiking and cycling or you just want to fly and flop, the peaceful, crowd-free surroundings are all part of the appeal.
Village streets
Picture a typical Majorcan village in your head, and it’ll probably be pretty close to what Estellenchs looks like in real life. It’s all stone-built houses with flower-draped balconies and wooden shutters arranged along winding, cobbled lanes, so a stroll around is a must. And once you’ve racked up enough mileage, you can top things off by stepping into one of the traditional restaurants for seafood and sangria. Well, we say step in – most of them are actually al fresco setups, so you’ll be dining out in the open.
Sea swims, sorted
After a few days of eyeing up the sea from the village’s viewpoints, you’ll be desperate to go for a dip. And a 25-minute walk’s all that separates you from Cala Estellenchs – a thin ribbon of pebble beach with a restaurant on one side and a collection of tiny fishing boats on the other. The water’s as clear as glass in these parts, so don’t forget to throw your snorkelling gear in your bag before you set off.
Pop over to Palma
Despite its far-from-it-all feel, Estellenchs is within daytripping distance of some of Majorca’s major players. The capital – Palma – is about 45 minutes’ drive away. If you’re like most people who arrive here, you’ll make a dash straight for the grand cathedral before trundling around the narrow lanes of the old town. And come lunchtime, your most difficult task will be deciding which of the tapas restaurants to duck into.
